WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR ADULT ONSET ASTHMA? |
The most important part of treating adult onset asthma is to keep a check of how well your lung functions so that you may know the changes in the airways that may worsen your asthma. This will help your doctor in formulating your treatment plan. Avoid allergens or other substances which triggers your asthma symptoms. Medications like bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antihistamines and anti-inflammatory may prompt your asthma flare-ups. Basically medications for asthma and management or prevention of asthma symptoms are done through knowing the severity and reason for the triggered asthma symptoms. Adult onset asthma can not be cured but treating it can prevent asthma flare ups. These treatments include avoiding the triggers like certain medications, pollens or dust, cigarette smoke, cessation of smoking and other factors that irritates your airways. There are several medications that can help you in relieving your symptoms. These are short acting beta-2 agonists (salbutamol, terbutaline), Ipratropium, and Oral corticosteroids. The drugs used for preventing the symptoms and flare ups include inhaled corticosteroids, long acting beta agonists, cromolyns, leukotriene receptor antagonists and controlled release theophylline. Severe asthma requires hospitalization and treatment including continuous oxygen, nebulised beta agonists, steroids, adrenaline, intubation and ventilation. Also alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, and many more are also available to alleviate symptoms. |
