Can Second Hand Smoke cause Asthma Attacks?

Asthma is a condition that affects millions of people around the globe. This is a disease which basically affects the respiratory system. During, an asthma attack it becomes difficult for the person to breath. An asthma attack is triggered due to a number of environmental factors. Smoking is one of these factors and according to studies, it has been found out that the asthma patients who smoke have even worse asthma symptoms. In fact the second hand smoke can trigger asthma attacks.

The reason for this is that the second hand smoke contains particulate matter as well as toxic chemicals which can trigger off asthmatic responses. These particles affect the soft bronchial tissues and trigger a reaction. Inhaling smoke cause the inflammation of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. In smokers, this inflammation is more due to the combination of the smoke and disease. Mucus traps the foreign substances and helps cilia lining the airway to remove these particles from the body. However the smoke destroys these cilia lined cells and it becomes difficult to get rid of these particles and mucus.

Thus it is often advised to people with asthmatic children to quit smoking.
